The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered public officers who abused Covid-19 response funds to repay to the government by the end of next month.
The ombudsman Martha Chizuma has this morning presented a report titled ‘Misplaced Priorities’ which is an investigation into the allegations concerning the lack of transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Malawi National Covid-19 Preparedness and Response Plan.
This follows reports that some officers received allowances for more than four days even though they worked only for a day in facilitating the repatriation of returnees from South Africa.
She also discloses that 78 per cent of the funds given to the Covid-19 coordination unit were spent on allowances.
Chizuma has also called for a criminal investigation into the procurement of materials which were not delivered to Machinga District Hospital.
The report also faults the Reserve Bank of Malawi for flouting procedures in its donation towards the coronavirus response.
