The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) describes as a surprise the interest shown by some individuals to contest for the party’s presidency.
Social media is awash with names of different people believed to be eying the party’s top leadership should a convention be held soon.
Some of the names being mentioned as possible contestants include former Reserve Bank of Malawi governor Dalitso Kabambe, DPP vice President for the South Kondwani Nankhumwa and the current Football Association of Malawi leader Walter Nyamilandu.
In an interview with Capital FM, the DPP’s interim spokesperson Brown Mpinganjira emphasized that they are yet to announce the dates for the convention hence need for calm among the membership.
“The convention date is not announced yet because we put in motion a process which includes what the Function Review Committee is doing, seeking views from members of the party and the general public (well-wishers) and the process is ongoing.”
When asked as to when the party’s central committee and the National Governing Council will finalize their consultations and recommendations, Mpinganjira said, “The day that the Functionary Review Committee submits its report to the Central Committee it will be possible then to draw up a roadmap for the rest of the activities. But as it is, before we receive that report it will only be speculative to start talking about the convention”.
Last year, current leader Peter Mutharika told his followers that he will not seek re-election after he was defeated by the Lazarus Chakwera led Tonse Alliance in the June 23 fresh presidential election.
