Zomba man arrested for defiling 5-month old baby

A 31-year-old man is in police custody in Zomba for allegedly defiling a 5-month-old baby.

The suspect, Muderanji Kanjila is believed to have defiled the child on 21 November.

According to Zomba Police Station spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano the couple was with their baby when the suspect asked them to have the child so that he could play with her at his home since they are neighbours.

After an hour the suspect brought back the child to her parents while she was crying. The mother noticed blood spots on the baby’s clothes and bruises on her private part.

The matter was reported to the police and the suspect was immediately arrested.

The victim was given a medical report form for examination and treatment at Zomba Central Hospital whose results proved that the baby had been defiled.

The development comes amid rising cases of sexual violence against women, girls and children. It also falls at the onset of this year’s sixteen days of activism which run from.

Malawi yesterday joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 16 days which span from 25 November to 10 December. The theme this year is -Unite to End Gender-Based Violence.
